Dynamic Fit Testing: Specifying Feminine Hygiene Products for Movement and Sleep

Absorbency is tested on a product that is not moving. Users are. For product lines sold into sport, school or overnight use, whether the product stays where it was placed matters as much as how much it holds — and it requires a separate test module. A dynamic fit protocol covers six movements, measures displacement after each, and records leakage by direction rather than as a single result.

Where this signal comes from: user discussions in menstrual product communities describe leakage concentrated in specific activities — during sleep, during dance and ballet, on standing after sitting — while the same products perform acceptably in ordinary daily use. Why static testing misses this

Standard test conditions hold the product flat or on a fixed form, at a stable temperature, with liquid introduced at a controlled rate. Every one of those conditions differs from use:

  • position changes between standing, sitting, lying and turning

What to measure after each movement

Three measurement categories, recorded separately:

Displacement

  • front-to-back movement of the product relative to its starting position, in millimetres
  • lateral movement
  • rotation
  • for pull-on products: rear panel ride-up distance

Structural change

  • wing adhesive release, partial or full
  • core folding, curling or ridge formation
  • edge lifting from the garment
  • gusset deformation under load

Leakage, by direction

  • front, rear and side recorded separately, per movement
  • at more than one load level, since a partially loaded product moves differently from a dry one

Test loaded, not dry. A dry product is stiffer, lighter and better attached than a loaded one. Dynamic testing on a dry product measures the easiest case and tells you little about the situation that generates complaints.

Garment interaction: a variable outside the product

For pads, displacement depends partly on the underwear the product is attached to, which the brand does not control. That is not a reason to leave it untested — it is a reason to test across a range:

  • different gusset widths and fabric types
  • fitted athletic garments as well as ordinary underwear
  • a double-layer arrangement, since some users add a second garment specifically to hold a product in place

Two specification consequences follow. Adhesive should be specified for performance across fabric types rather than on one reference fabric, and adhesive panel coverage area matters as much as adhesive strength — a stronger adhesive on a smaller panel displaces more readily than a moderate adhesive spread wider.

Dynamic testing is worth doing partly because it makes a defensible claim possible where none existed before. With supporting data:

  • Secure fit for movement
  • Designed to stay secure during movement
  • Extended front-to-back coverage
  • Fast absorption for sudden flow

Without supporting data, none of these should appear. And regardless of data, avoid absolutes: never shifts, stays perfectly in place, prevents accidents. Displacement is a range, not a guarantee, and garment interaction alone makes a guarantee impossible.
