Consistency Per Unit: A Product Property Worth Specifying and Stating
Buyers are increasingly uncertain not about whether a product works, but about whether it still works the same as when they bought it. That uncertainty is a specification problem before it is a marketing problem. Batch-to-batch consistency should be defined with tolerance bands, sampling frequency, retained references and shelf-life conditions — and then stated as a product fact rather than as a comparison against any alternative.
Where this signal comes from: user discussions in menstrual product communities show sustained uncertainty about when a product stops being reliable. The frustration is not that products have limits, but that buyers have no way to know where the limit is.
The question behind "is it still the same?"
Two versions of this question arrive from different directions, and both matter to a brand:

Both are consistency questions, and both are answerable at the specification stage. Neither is answerable by a stronger performance claim — a claim about peak performance says nothing about variation.

Product development usually optimises peak performance on an approved sample. What the buyer experiences is the distribution across every unit produced afterwards.

The gap between the two columns is what consistency specification is for.
What to specify
- Tolerance bands, not target values. For each key property — capacity, absorption rate, surface feel, dimensions, adhesive performance — specify an acceptable range rather than a single number. A target with no band cannot be checked.
- Sampling frequency. How often units are drawn during a run, and how many. Consistency claims depend on sampling density, not on a single end-of-run check.
- Retained reference samples. One sealed sample per batch held by both parties. This is what makes a later comparison possible rather than a matter of recollection.
- Material lot traceability. Which material lots went into which production batch, so a variation can be traced rather than guessed at.
- Re-qualification triggers. Which changes require re-testing before the next run: material substitution, supplier change, line change, or a change in construction.
Shelf-life and storage effects
Some stated properties change with time and storage, and it is better to know which:
- Adhesive performance can vary with temperature history during storage and transport
- Wrapper and pack integrity can be affected by humidity and stacking pressure
- Printed surfaces can show ink transfer after time in warm storage
- Surface feel can change slightly under prolonged compression in a stacked pack
Specify the storage conditions under which stated properties hold, and include those conditions in the documentation given to distributors. A property that only holds under conditions nobody communicated is a complaint waiting to happen.
How to state consistency without comparative claims
The line to hold: state what your product does. Do not state what an alternative product fails to do. "A fresh absorbent core in every unit" is a product fact. "More hygienic than reusable alternatives" is a comparative claim about someone else's product, it is not supportable, and it alienates buyers who use both.

- Individually wrapped, sealed until use
- No performance guesswork — each unit is used once
Wording to avoid:
- More hygienic than any alternative
- Safer than reusable products
- Cleaner than washing

Consistency as a supplier evaluation question
For a brand owner assessing manufacturers, consistency is one of the few areas with concrete, answerable questions:
- Are tolerance bands defined for each key property, or only target values?
- What is the sampling frequency during a production run?
- Are reference samples retained per batch, and for how long?
- Can a finished unit be traced back to its material lots?
- Which changes trigger re-qualification before the next run?
A supplier that can answer all five specifically is describing a system. One that answers generally is describing an intention.
